Celebrating 20 years of
Preserving the historic buildings, programs and traditions of the State Fair
Not only has the Minnesota State Fair been a tradition for generations of families for over 160 years, it has also reflected and shaped the culture of Minnesota and beyond. To preserve this rich history, the Foundation helps the State Fair care for its historic buildings and bring history to life for fair fans today and into the future.
History & Heritage Center and West End Market
In 2014, Foundation donors were instrumental in the development of the History & Heritage Center at the fairground’s West End. Over 600 donors contributed more than $4 million to the campaign – the largest amount raised for a special project in the Foundation’s 20-year history.
The State Fair History & Heritage Center was the primary component of the campaign to provide an accessible space for fair guests to learn and reminisce about the past of their beloved fair. Developed in partnership with the Minnesota Historical Society and the Minnesota State Fair Foundation, the center showcases exhibits that bring to life the significant events, intriguing stories and inspiring traditions that have laid the foundation for the present-day Great Minnesota Get-Together.
The campaign also provided funding for the Hugh and Margaret Schilling Amphitheater, the Horton Picnic Pavilions in Heffron Park, KSTP Plaza and West End Market benches. These improvements will be enjoyed and appreciated by fair guests for decades to come.
The West End Market features dozens of artisans, craftspeople and specialty merchants selling fine handmade, upcycled and Minnesota-themed wares; and many food and beverage options for fair guests to enjoy.
